In this paper we present the tool MOTESDM which is used for knowledge based diagnosis of a sewage plant. MOTESDM supports hybrid knowledge representation that allows us to ad- equately express knowledge about the struc- ture of the sewage plant, knowledge about well understood purification processes and as- sociative knowledge for the diagnosis of the sewage plant. The knowledge representation formalisms make use of object-oriented con- cepts since classes and inheritance promote a modular design of knowledge bases. In our pa- per we describe the object-oriented knowledge representation, we discuss the implementation of our tool in Smalltalk-80 and we review the development of a prototypical knowledge base for a sewage plant in Salzgitter-Bad (FRG).
