Positioning is a system to determine a position in the certain area. Most of them use Global Positioning Service (GPS). However, GPS has many weaknesses, when it is used at indoor area (building) and crowded city. The positioning systems that are commonly developed are RADAR, RF-ID, and Active-Badge. The disadvantages of these systems are high cost and the need of additional tools. Because of those reasons, this paper offers a positioning system application that is relatively less expensive, uses no additional tools at client, and is applied easily. This application uses bluetooth technology commonly found at communication devices such as celluler phone, and PDA. This system uses a proximity detection method. In this system, the client will do the device discovery to get ID from bluetooth acces point. Furthermore, the status of access point which can be reached or not by client will be used to determine the position. This positioning system is applied to an exhibitation to help visitors locating their position an the stands which they wish to see. In addition, visitors can access information using their devices. The application is created using J2SE programming at server and J2ME programming at client. The client is bluetooth supported and Java enabled device. Experiment result shows that the system depends on the level of success in conducting device discovery. The system admin also needs to conduct site survey for server location to produce the desired area. Keywords: Positioning, Exhibition, Bluetooth, Proximity Detection
