This paper describes and analyses the implemen- tation of a persistent object-oriented environment in C++, based on a relational database. Major design issues and solutions are discussed, with the aim of highlighting some fundamental issues concerning persistence in object-oriented systems. Some observations are made about experiences of implementing manufacturing management appli- cations in this environment.
