In this research we approach the question of network design from the perspective of the applications and ask: How much network do we need? We answer this question, in the connext of shared memory multiprocessors, for 4 scientific applications. We simulate their executions under infinite bandwith assumptions needs. These profiles are then fed into a performance model of hwo network . Our results suggest that networks should provide a remote memory bandwith constrained network. Our results suggest that networks should provide a remote memory bandwidth of 2-4 bits/ operations
