Object-oriented programming has been used in Hewlett-Packard since the early nineteen eighties. In this period its popularity has increased enor- mously and it has been used extensively on a num- ber of projects. The momentum is such that it is now commonplace for projects to consider switch- ing from procedural programming to using C++ or one of the other object-oriented languages. Unfortunately adopting the object-oriented ap- proach is not a guarantee of success. The new tech- nology presents software development managers with new challenges. Based on experience drawn from many parts of Hewlett-Packard this paper covers some of the important issues for managers to consider when switching to object oriented tech- niques. The paper covers software process, analysis and design, object-oriented architectures, prototyping and software reuse. The main conclusion is that the object-oriented approach intensifies the need organised and disciplined approach to soft- for an ware development.
